Beloved Maine Pub Owner Passes Away
One of the special things about life in Maine is the number of locally-owned restaurants and bars in our state, like Lisa's Restaurant in Augusta, the Silver Street Tavern in Waterville, and DeMillo's in Portland, to name a few.
There is nothing wrong with corporate-owned chain restaurants, but there is something special about a place where you encounter members of the family who own the establishment each time you visit. These people quickly learn your name, where you work, your favorite beverage, and your go-to meal. It gives these establishments a real Cheers feel.
Sadly, Maine has lost one of these pub owners.
According to a WABI article, Patrick “Pat” Geaghan, one of the owners of Geaghan's Pub, has passed away.
The announcement was made via a post on the business's Facebook page.
The post, which appears to have been written by Patrick's nephew, reads, in part:
Uncle Pat spent the last few years teaching me about love and devotion as he spent all of his time outside of the business as the lead caregiver for his beloved wife as she battled valiantly through a cancer diagnosis that ultimately took her life. Aunt Brenda was tough as nails and fought her fight with the same honor and dignity as she lived her life. In the past few months, Pat found his own health slipping, ultimately to a place where he was unable to recover.
Around for nearly 50 years, the business opened as John Geaghan’s Roadhouse Restaurant in 1975. The article explains that it was opened by Patrick's parents, John and Arline. Years later, Patrick joined his brothers, Larry and Peter, as one of the owners. In 2010, Patrick's nephew, Andrew, took over part of the ownership.
Our thoughts go out to the entire Geaghan family during this difficult time.
