Regardless of who you blame for the government shutdown (we all have our opinions), it really stinks that the people who legitimately (really!) need their SNAP benefits are not going to be getting those benefits in November.

Well, technically, they will still get them, but there will be a delay in getting the money added to your card in November.

It looks like some locally owned restaurants are stepping up to help those people out.

According to an article on the WABI website, both Provender Kitchen & Bar in Ellsworth plans to offer free prepared meals throughout the duration of the situation.

Provender Kitchen & Bar is a higher-end, but casual restaurant that serves up mostly burgers and sandwiches.  They have agreed to provide those who receive SNAP benefits with free meals.

A statement on their Facebook page says:

No one should go hungry. Period.
This may not be a permanent fix, but doing nothing is not an option. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out to me directly here so we can arrange details. All communication will be handled with respect and confidentiality.
You are not alone. We are here to support our community.

Blaze in Bangor is planning to offer a 50% discount to those on the EBT program.  All a recipient need to do is present their card and their entire bill will be cut in half.
