Maine State Police Investigating the Deaths of Man and Woman Discovered on Wednesday

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, two people were found dead Wednesday morning inside a Rumford residence, prompting an investigation by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.

At approximately 8:53 AM on August 19, 2026, Rumford Police responded to a residence on Franklin Street for a well-being check.  When officers arrived, they found an adult male and an adult female deceased inside the home.

Rumford Police requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South.  Detectives, along with members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team, responded to the scene and began investigating.

The two individuals will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be conducted to confirm their identities and determine the cause and manner of death.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Police say there is no danger to the public.

In July 1921, 34 members of the State Highway Police began work under the State Highway Commission, followed by 25 more officers in August. Known as Inspectors, most worked seasonally while a few served full-time. They enforced motor vehicle laws, collected registration and license fees, and some patrolled on Harley-Davidson or Indian motorcycles. Most were assigned to offices throughout the state.
