Just days from Christmas, one Central Maine school is dealing with tragedy.

According to an article on the WMTW website, Regional School Unit 18 Superintendent Carl Gartley sent an email on Friday morning explaining that a student from the district's Messalonskee High School had died.

In the email, Superintendent Gartley reportedly said that he was unable to identify the student because of an ongoing police investigation.

The article explains that the Maine State Police are in the process of investigating an incident in Sidney, but that the Maine Department of Public Safety declined to say whether or not the investigation was related to the student's death.

The email from Superintendent Gartley said, in part:

I am writing to you with a heavy heart to share the tragic news of the passing of one of our high school students.  Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

Messalonskee High School, which is part of the RSU 18 school district, serves Sidney, Rome, Belgrade, Oakland, and China.

The WMTW article goes on to say that counselors will be available for students at Messalonskee High School from 9 to 11 AM on Saturday.
