Merriam-Webster Dictionary has picked their ‘word of the year’, and like Oxford Dictionary's word of the year, it’s not a word. Merriam-Webster picked a suffix as their word of the year: 'ism'

You may remember the Oxford Dictionary picked an emoji as their word. It was a smiley face with tears falling from its eyes.

Merriam-Webster’s is an 'ism'. The top ism's to earn high traffic spikes and big bumps in lookups on the dictionary company's website in 2015 over the year are: socialism, fascism, racism, feminism, communism, capitalism and terrorism.

The editor at larger said we had a lot on our minds this year, it was a serious year. With the attacks on Paris and Colorado one of the most popular words frequently looked up was fascism, a word most closely associated with various act of terrorism. Look ups for racism were at an all time high this year too.

Other ‘ism’ words on the move at Merriam-Webster.com this year were professionalism, masochism, federalism, pragmatism, existentialism, hedonism and Marxism.
