Closure of Large Central Maine Bakery Affects 100+ Employees
For a quarter of a century, the very large bakery on Forrestal Street in Lewiston has baked donuts and other tasty treats for dozens of local Dunkin' locations.
If you have enjoyed a Boston Cream donut, munchkins, or a blueberry muffin at a Dunkin' location in Maine, there is a good chance that it came from Lewiston's Mid Maine CPL.
Sadly, the bakery, Mid Maine CPL, closed its doors and laid off its staff on December 29th.
The reason given for the shutdown was ageing infrastructure and high operating costs.
According to an article in the Lewiston Sun Journal, the business has been the largest bakery and delivery contractor for Dunkin’ franchises in the region since 2001. Former employee told a reporter for the Sun Journal that Mid Maine CPL supplied as many as 120 Dunkin’ locations during the winter months, and closer to 200 stores the rest of the year.
Which stores used the bakery? While this has not been stated by the company, the article explains that an inside source says that, in order to maintain the freshness of the product, the bakery only supplied Dunkin' locations within three hours of Lewiston.
An exact number isn’t clear yet, but one former employee estimates the company employed somewhere between 150 and 200 people.
If you are a regular Dunkin' customer, it is important to note that there has been no disruption to product delivery. According to a Lewiston Sun Journal article, the locations that had been serviced by Mid Maine CPL are now getting deliveries from other bakeries.
