
More Maine Farmers Markets Are Accepting SNAP Cards
This time of year, Mainer's shop one of many statewide farmers markets to get fresh fruits and vegetables. Now many of the farmer's markets are accepting SNAP cards (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
There are 140 farmers markets in Maine and 37 of them are now accepting SNAP cards, that's up from 29 last year.
The idea is to get fresh, healthy foods to those who usually could not afford them.
In its first year, nearly $122,000 in SNAP benefits were spent at Maine farmers markets.
The Farmers Market at Mill Park in Augusta is one of the farmers markets that are accepting SNAP cards.
