We all know that energy drinks have been the rage for sometime now. However when I heard that PepsiCo, the parent company of Pepsi was introducing a drink to help you sleep I was a little surprised.

Apparently this new beverage, called Driftwell is made for de-stressing and relaxation, something I could certainly use in my life.

I haven't had the chance to try it yet but according to an article by CNN.com it is a calorie and sugar-free noncarbonated water, that is flavored with just a tad of blackberry and lavender. It also contains 200 milligrams of L-theanine and some magnesium.

According to those in the know it may hit "online" store shelves as soon as December and brick and mortar stores in January. It will be served up in 7.5-ounce mini cans. Expect pricing to be in the ball park of $17.99 for a 10-pack.

According to  Emily Silver, vice president of innovation and capabilities at PepsiCo Beverages North America;

“We started this project before COVID, but especially now with all the stress, we’re juggling a lot of things and need sleep. The concentration around sleep wellness or sleep hygiene has massively increased in the last few years.”

It was a interesting move to go with L-theanine, an amino acid that’s found in green and black teas as the main supplement. Most would expect melatonin or even diphenhydramine however a few studies have suggested that L-theanine can improve sleep quality and can help reduce the physical symptoms of stress.

Emily Silver says;

“From a scientific and regulatory perspective, we feel really good about making that claim around L-theanine. Specifically, we have safety in clinical data to prove that it works.”

If it does everything it claims to do, I will take it by the case. Time will tell.
