Permanent Closure Of Central Maine Mill Delayed
In September, Pixelle announced that they would be permanently closing their paper mill in the Town of Jay. Now, it appears that the mill will stay open for at least a little while longer.
According to WMTW, the company released a statement on Friday morning saying that the mill, which first opened in the 1960s, would remain open through the end of April.
The announcement that the mill would be closing was a shock to the town of 4,600. Currently, the mill employs 230 people, a significant portion of the town's working population.
With the closure of the venerable mill looming, the State of Maine has stepped up to help those people who will be displaced when the mill closes. The Maine Department of Labor's Rapid Response Team has teamed up with the Spruce Mountain Adult Education to host a career resources fair. That event will take place from 3 PM to 7 PM on Monday, December 5th, 2022 at Spruce Mountain Adult Education at 9 Cedar St. in Livermore Falls.
