Photos Show a Carnival Cruise Ship Currently on Fire, Docked at Grand Turk
**UPDATE: New photos show the fire extinguished***
Original story follows;
Several photos and videos that are being shared in a Carnival Cruise Line fan page appear to show part of the exhaust stack on the Carnival Freedom on fire early Thursday morning.
Matt James is part of the group on Facebook that was sharing information and photos in real time. Currently, the Carnival Freedom is docked in Grand Turk of the Turks & Caicos Islands, and is docked directly next to a much larger sister ship, the Carnival Mardi Gras.
In some video footage that was posted to the page, it appeared that guests that were still on the ship that hadn't disembarked in the port-of-call were still being allowed to remain on the Lido deck. There didn't appear to be any sense of urgency to evacuate the ship. This could mean that the fire in the exhaust stack isn't considered overly serious, though we don't have information to confirm that theory as of yet.
According to WFLA, passengers were initially asked to head to their muster stations with life jackets on. Additionally, WFLA says that as their update, no injuries had been reported.
WFLA also reported that no evacuations of the ship had been ordered and that several passengers believed that the situation was 'under control'.
According to Ship Technology,
Principally intended to sail the Mediterranean, the 110,000t Panama-registered Freedom is 952ft (290m) long and 116ft (35.5m) wide. It has a 1,150-strong crew, 1,487 cabins and can carry 2,974 passengers at a cruising speed of 21k.
We will continue to keep this story updated as more information becomes available to us.
