With the high school sports season postponed by a week while administrators weigh in on safety concerns, a group of Mainers are planning a school sports rally in Augusta.

According to WCSH 6, athletes, parents, and school administrators are expected to gather for a "Let Them Play" rally today (September 7th) at noon.  It will take place in Augusta's Capitol Park.

Initially, teams supposed to begin practicing tomorrow (September 8th).  Then, last week, the Maine Principles Association opted to delay the start of the season until September 14.  This time was meant to re-evaluate current guidelines and advisories.

In guidelines released last week, the state suggested that only golf and cross-country competitions take place between schools.  they recommended that other sports, like football, should only be played "inter-squad".

Many athletes and parents are frustrated by the back-and-forth between the involved agencies and groups.

Rally organizers are asking all attendees to wear masks and practice social distancing.
