Update - The unit finally reached the ballfield in Bar Harbor Thursday evening

It's been a tough 24 hours for the crew responsible for transporting the new MRI building to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor. Last night, the trailer carrying the unit bottomed out on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge shutting down the bridge and delaying the arrival by a day.

Today, Thursday, July 15, the trek resumed and went fine through Ellsworth and Trenton and onto the Island. They were actually moving a little ahead of schedule, and I was in Bar Harbor at the ballfield waiting for them to arrive. I wanted to take photos of the unit being lifted onto the trailer that would take it to the hospital.

Then word came that the trailer and unit were stuck in Northeast Harbor, near the Asticou Inn.

Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island Police had Route 3 blocked between the Asticou Inn and the fountain in Seal Harbor.

Getting to the site, I saw that the trailer had bottomed out.

I certainly feel for the driver and the crew. It's been a very tough 24 hours, and they were less than 11 miles from being done, safe in Bar Harbor.

When I left a wrecker had been called again, and the expectation was that Route 3 would be shut down for a couple of hours.

As of 2:40 p.m. Route 3 was still shut down.

The good news is that once this unit gets to Mount Desert Island Hospital and becomes operational it will be a game changer for patients and physicians. I'm told that the closest unit with similar capabilities is in Portland.
