We are really fortunate to have some of the best first responders in the country right here in Maine.

Our police, sheriff's deputies, Maine State Police troopers, and firefighters would literally lay down their lives in order to protect the people of Maine.

Apparently, that dedication also extends to our furry friends.

The Clinton Fire Department has been recognized by PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The national organization is giving the department the Compassionate Fire Department Award in recognition of their efforts to save Dunkin, a dog who had fallen through the ice on the Kennebec River.

The press release says they are honoring the:

Clinton Fire Department in recognition of their teams’ bravery in saving a dog who fell through ice and was struggling to stay afloat in the Kennebec River near River Road. The crew—aided by Fairfield-Benton Emergency Services and the Skowhegan Fire Department—put on rescue suits and entered the frigid water to save the dog, named Dunkin, who was unharmed and reunited with his guardians.

The department will receive a framed certificate and vegan chocolates from PETA.
