The 38-year-old woman that was struck and killed in Topsham while walking with her 6-year-old son has been identified as Margaret Reid of California, according to WGME 13.

Police went on to say that it presently appears that the driver of the car that struck the woman, a 35-year-old Brunswick man, had fallen asleep behind the wheel while driving home from work on RT 196.

According to WMTW News 8, a woman was hit and killed Tuesday in Topsham while she was walking with her child.

The incident occurred at about 10:30 Tuesday morning on Route 196 near Ivanhoe Drive. Police say that the woman was walking with her son when a vehicle approaching from the same direction crossed over the centerline and hit her from behind.

Though the mother was struck, the child was not. The woman was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where she sadly passed away from her injuries.

The driver of the car was transported to Maine Medical Center with what are considered to be 'minor' injuries.

The child was not hit or injured in the crash.

At this time, the names of those involved are being withheld as officials work to notify the family members of the deceased. We will keep this story updated as more information becomes available.
