The Humane Society Of The Waterville Area is looking for the public's help in located the owner of a sweet pup who they have been calling Virgil.

In a post on the shelter's Facebook page, he is a male Akita that was found in the Clinton area.

If you have any idea who is owner is, you can call 207.873.2430.

According to Wikipedia, the Akita breed originates from the mountainous northern region of Japan.  The breed is known for being independent.  While they are not typically very friendly to strangers, they are very affectionate with their family.

In feudal Japan, the dogs were often kept as companions for Samurai.  More recently, they were used by the military to track prisoners of war and lost sailors.  They were also bred with German Shepherds and used as guard dogs.

Many people do not realize that there are two different types of Akita: a Japanese strain, commonly called Akita Inu (inu means dog in Japanese) or Japanese Akita, and an American strain, known as the Akita or American Akita.  In most other parts of the world, the two types of Akita are considered separate dog breeds.  This is not true here in the United States, though.
