It really sucks (do you mind if I say sucks?) , that things all around Maine are being cancelled in the wake of a worldwide pandemic. But worry not, even though some of our most traditional events in the area are being cancelled for a year, organizers are working hard on replacement events so that the season doesn't have to go a full year without a little holiday fun.

Though the city of Waterville won't see the annual tradition of decorated, lighted floats parading down College Ave and Main Street, they are diligently working to set up a 'light up the town' contest. Being orchestrated by the Children's Discovery Museum, businesses and individuals will be encouraged to decorate their properties Clark Griswold style using as many lights as possible. According to the Kennebec Journal, a panel of judges, including Santa himself, will drive around the town on Black Friday and judge all of the light displays. The winner will be announced the following week. If you want to participate in the contest you will need to register by clicking here.

Additionally, there will be a map made up of all participants in the contest so that members of the community can go out and drive around town to see all the lights, too. It's kind of like a backwards parade this year, but at least it still gets people out and about and, most importantly, into the holiday spirit!

Oh, and if you're wondering how your child can still get their list to Santa this year there will be a special 'Letters to Santa' activity set up this year. You can write Santa your letter and leave them in his mailbox at the Kringleville location at Waterville's Castonguay Square. If your child leaves a return address they will get a letter back. How cool!
