The Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York is tomorrow, June 6th. American Pharoah is the favorite and the 14ht horse since 1978 to try to win the Triple Crown.

In 1978, Affirmed won the Triple Crown and that was the last time there was a three race winner. To win the Triple Crown the winner has to win the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

One reason 13 horses have tried, and failed, is two-fold. Most horses are built for speed not distance and the Belmont Stakes is a distance race. It’s a mile and a half race and a lot of front runners, run out of gas before the finish line.

The second reason is a lot of horses skip a race before the Belmont. Nine of the last Belmont winners skipped either the Kentucky Derby or Preakness. Not being in as many races will make a horse fresher and might give them more stamina in the Belmont.

Despite all of that, American Pharoah is still the favorite to win tomorrow’s race.
