This seems to be a common question asked by many.  How old does my child have to be to stay home alone?  Here is a helpful guide to help you make the tough decision:

Of course, each child is different and it is still up to you as the parent to make the right choice.

7 & under: Should not be left home alone for any period of time
8-10 years: Should not be left home alone for more than a 1 1/2 hours & only during daylight and early evening hours.
11-12 years: May be left alone for up to 3 hours but not late at night
13-15 years: May be left unsupervised...but not overnight
16-17 years: May be left unsupervised...up to 2 consecutive overnight periods.

  • Things to memorize: Full name, address & phone number
  • Post an emergency list: local and long distance numbers to call in case of an emergency.
  • Let neighbors know that your child may be home alone
  • Call the child several times while you are away
  • Teach your child how to lock windows and doors
  • Tell your child not to go into other people's homes (neighbors included) without your permission
  • Designate a safe house your child can run to if your child feels like he/she is in danger
  • Teach  your children about kitchen safety and what is/is not ok when you are not at home with them

Again, these are just suggestions.  Personally, I have an 11 year old who is 11 going on 30.  I trust her more than I trust myself at times.  I also have another 11 year old who I wouldn't even trust to stay home alone for 30 minutes.  So please, use your best judgment when leaving your kiddos home.
