Fall

It looks like it is going to be a terrific fall foliage season in Maine this year. The Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry says conditions in the northernmost part of Maine are prime for very low leaf drop and subtle color changes.

You may have noticed by the bite in the air or the goo in your eyes -- fall is here! We have mixed emotions about this, so we thought we'd treat it like every person we've ever dated and make a thorough pro/con list about it before it never returns our calls anyway.

For all of you who are keeping track, my favorite time of the year happens to be fall. Save your hot and humid summers. Forget your long and dreary winters. Give me cool, crisp foggy mornings and early nights. I demand ripe pumpkins and an array of autumn foliage.

I love TV. I admit it. With back to school upon us, now comes my favorite time of the year.  The new television season! Things get rolling this this week. Thanks to Hulu and Netflix, I have done an amazing job of watching older shows I have wanted to see, I am looking forward to some new entertainment.

Now that Labor Day is behind us, it's time to put away the summer things and look forward to fall. One of the highlights of living in New England in general, and Maine in particular is the beautiful fall foliage that surrounds us each year...

Getting up so early in the morning it's still pitch black outside. When I go out to start my car I stop for a moment and look up at the sky. I LOVE seeing the Milky Way and all the stars. Living out in the country has its advantages. But this morning I saw something I was not too excited about.

It looks like we could be in for an excellent leaf-peeping season. According to Maine forestry officials in Augusta, the hot, dry summer may deliver an ideal foliage season.  Gale Ross, Maine’s foliage spokeswoman has been fielding calls already from potential visitors about the upcoming season. One call came in from China.

Even though the calender still says it's summer, the fall colors are starting to pop in Maine. The magical time of year when brilliant reds and yellows dazzle behind a deep blue Maine sky are upon us. The colors are starting to appear in northern Maine and within the next few weeks they'll be changing here in central Maine.

There’s nothing better than fall in Maine. Cool, crisp mornings, the colors of the fall foliage, raking the leaves into a huge pile and jumping into it and apple season! Some of my favorite childhood memories, while growing up in Auburn, were the family piling into the station wagon and driving to the local apple orchards.

Don’t be bummed that summer is over. Fall is pretty awesome.
