It was a tradition when I was going to Edward Little High School in Auburn, Maine. On football game day, the players would wear their jersey and the cheerleaders would wear their uniforms.

We'll admit that the first time we saw a team wear a throwback uniform, we thought it was cool. But these days it's just gotten out of hand.
