The Amtrak Downeaster is set to expand service northward to Freeport and Brunswick in November. Crews are finishing up the work on the tracks and a ceremonial train ride from Boston will be held on November 1st. A full schedule of two round trips per day will begin on November 2nd.

The Amtrak Downeaster has been a huge success with it's Portland to Boston route. In the fiscal year ending on June 30th, ridership was up 4.3% to over 541,000 passenegers. City officals in both Brunswick and Freeport are eagerly anticipating that success to be matched for the routes to their cities. The Brunswick Downtown Association says that riders are already buying tickets.

I've taken the Downeaster a few times for trips to Boston to see the Red Sox. I throughly enjoyed the experience and I am looking foward to the new Brunswick station that will be closer for those living in Central Maine.
