Riding the rails, that's what many Mainers have done over the past year. The ridership on the Amtrak's Downeaster Boston-to-Maine passenger train continues to grow.Amtrak announced this week that 256,000 passengers rode the Downeaster in the first six months of the current fiscal year, from October through March. That is an increase of nearly five percent over the same period last year.

The Downeast route expanded north to Freeport and Brunswick in November of 2012.

Ridership on all Amtrak trains increased about one percent from October through March, with March setting a record for the single best month ever.

The Downeaster had the 11th largest percentage increase of the 45 Amtrak routes nationwide.
