According to WABI, applications are now being accepted for a scholarship established to honor Somerset County Sheriff’s Corporal Eugene Cole, who was killed in the line of duty in Norridgewock on April 25, 2018.

Created in 2019, the Corporal Eugene Cole Scholarship Fund was launched by Cole’s family along with members of the law enforcement community.

Organizers say the goal is to carry forward Cole’s dedication to public service by helping others pursue similar careers.

According to those behind the fund, the scholarship—valued at more than $5,000—is open to Maine residents who are working toward post-secondary education in law enforcement or public safety fields.

They note that eligible career paths include roles such as police work, forensic science, crime or accident reconstruction, cybercrime investigation, and criminal justice, among others.

Fund representatives emphasize that the opportunity is not limited to traditional students. Adults returning to school with plans to enter the law enforcement field are also encouraged to apply, as part of the broader mission to support and grow the next generation of public safety professionals.
