According to WCSH 6, Bath Iron Works has been awarded a nearly $43 million contract modification.

The contract, for the production of DDG-51-class destroyers, was originally awarded in 2018.  The initial contract was for $49.8 million.  The addition is for $42,772,449.  It is possible that the contract could end up being worth nearly $305 million.  It is funded by the Naval Sea Systems Command of the U.S. Department of Defense.

The addition to the contract is meant to cover upgrades to the navy's DD-51 Arleigh Burk-class destroyers.

In a joint statement, Senators Susan Collins and Angus King said:

"From maritime security patrols in the North Atlantic to freedom of navigation missions in the Pacific, Arleigh Burke-class (DDG-51s) are the workhorses of the Navy.  This contract reflects the Navy’s ongoing confidence in Bath Iron Works to support and deliver high-quality ships that are essential to our national security."

Since 1884, Bath Iron Works has built private, commercial, and US Navy vessels.  During World War 2, vessels built at the yard were considered to be the toughest in the world.  Since 1995, BIW has been a subsidiary of General Dynamics.
