Bingham Couple Celebrated 78th Wedding Anniversary

Charlie and Norma Pooler of Bingham celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary this Saturday. When they were married in 1935, Norma had made her own wedding dress and Charlie wore his high school graduation suit.Charlie and Norma are still very active. Charlie, who is 9, still mows his lawn. Norma, who is 96 walks two miles a day!

So what is there secret for a successful marriage? Norma told WABI-TV that their formula for a successful marriage is to live and love together, and to give and forgive.

I thought it would be fun to look back at 1935 and see what life was like back when The Poolers' were first married.

Gas was 19 cents a gallon, a loaf of bread was 7 cents, a gallon of milk was 47 cents, a postage stamp was 3 cents, the average car cost $580, the average house cost $6,300 and the average U.S. salary was $1,500 a year.
