A 62-turbine wind farm has been proposed by Boston-based First Wind, if approved, this would be New England's largest wind farm. The proposed wind farm, dubbed the 'Bingham Wind Project', would have a generating capacity of 186 megawatts with the capacity to power 75,000 homes.First Wind has submitted an application to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to build the 62-turbine wind farm in Somerset and Piscataquis counties.

The project would cost $400 million.

The proposed turbines in the Bingham area would be 90 meters tall and have a rotor diameter of 112 or 113 meters. These turbines would be larger than other wind farms that First Wind has in Maine.

The Bingham Wind Project's turbines would be built in three Maine communities, Bingham, Mayfield Township and Kingsbury Plantation.

The DEP will now review the project, with yet unscheduled public hearings to follow.

If all goes as planned, construction would begin in 2014.
