Each week, we take a look at one of the communities in our listening area.  This week, it's Winthrop!

According to Wikipedia, Winthrop was first settled by Timothy Foster in 1765.  Originally called Pondtown Plantation, it was renamed Winthrop (in honor of the first colonial governor of Massachusetts) in April of 1771.  Like most towns in the 1700 and 1800s, Winthrop took advantage of nearby waterways to power industry.  There was a sawmill, oil clothe factories, and wool and cotton manufacturers.

Today, Winthrop acts as a "suburb" of Augusta and as a Summer tourist town.  Nearly 10% of the town's 6,000 residents are seasonal.
