Maine Teen Charged With Arson Following Wednesday Night Fire
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, an 18-year-old Belfast man has been charged with arson after investigators determined a fire inside a City Point Road home was intentionally set Wednesday night.
The Belfast Fire Department responded to 53 City Point Road at approximately 8:10 PM after receiving reports of a basement fire. By the time firefighters arrived, the homeowner had already put out the flames. Crews then ventilated the residence, which had filled with smoke.
The Maine Office of State Fire Marshal responded to investigate the cause of the fire. Investigators determined the blaze started in the basement and was intentionally set. While the fire caused only minor damage to the basement, it produced significant smoke throughout the home.
Following the investigation, State Fire Marshal investigators arrested Christopher Gordon, 18, of Belfast, and charged him with arson. Gordon lives at the home with other family members.
Authorities said no one was injured, and several pets inside the residence at the time of the fire were not harmed.
Officials also said Gordon was already on conditions of release in an unrelated case when he was arrested. Because of those conditions, no bail was set pending his initial court appearance.
The investigation remains ongoing.
