Time Square and the ball drop have nothin’ on Eastport’s The Great Sardine & Maple Leaf Drop. Yes, it sound like just what it is, they drop a sardine and a maple leaf.  Since Easport is on line between Maine and Canada they celebrate twice.  At 11pm eastern (midnight Atlantic time) they drop a 4-foot red plywood maple leaf,  then at midnight they drop the sardine.

Over the years, the whole thing has grown and become more popular. So popular, that CNN will be in Eastport to broadcast live to the world. Hey, it sounds kinda fun. They have other activities planned for the afternoon and evening, as well. So, why a sardine? Eastport is home of the first sardine cannery in the U.S.  As for the maple leaf? That is for Eastport’s Canadian neighbors.
