According to WABI, officials have released new details about the fire at the Eagle Point Energy Center in Orrington.

According to the Maine Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire started in the facility’s reclaim area, where trash is dumped and sorted.  Investigators say several items in the waste, including discarded batteries, may have sparked the blaze.

The fire was first reported Tuesday night, and crews were able to get it under control by Wednesday. No injuries were reported.

Orrington Town Manager Chris Backman says debris from the site is expected to be removed this week and taken to the Juniper Ridge landfill.

The fire has also sparked concern among local residents. During Monday night’s Select Board meeting, several people spoke during public comment, raising questions about public safety and the possible impact on the surrounding community. Some residents also voiced concerns about the health of first responders who spent hours battling the fire, while others called for stronger prevention measures and oversight at the plant.
