A Benton, Maine, man will spend the next three decades in prison after pleading guilty to a 2023 killing.

According to an article on the WABI website, 23-year-old Raheem Goodwin pleaded guilty to several charges, including murder and refusing to submit to arrest following a standoff with police.

Goodwin had admitted to fatally stabbing 62-year-old Edwin Weeks in Fairfield in 2023.

The article explains that the 29-year sentence is a "compromise" between prosecutors and Goodwin's lawyers. It goes on to say that if the case had gone to trial, they would have asked for a much longer sentence.

The article explains that victim impact statements allowed relatives of the deceased to direct comments to Goodwin.

One relative said:

"They say the only thing you truly have in this life is your family name and that you should take care of it, make sure it stays clean and free from shame. Raheem, for the rest of your days, you will have to carry the knowledge that you failed in that simple task. And if you lived 100 lifetimes on your best day, you could never be half the man my brother was on his worst day."

Goodwin will reportedly serve his sentence at the Maine State Prison.
