Sometimes the places right under our noses can be the most interesting. Fort Western is one great example.

According to their official website, "The Fort was built by the Kennebec Proprietors, a Boston-based company seeking to settle the lands along the Kennebec River that had been granted to the Pilgrims more than a century earlier. The company and the Province of Massachusetts both were interested in expanding their influence in the area as part of an effort by Britain and her colonies to take final political control of North America and to sever what they saw as the ties between the Abenaki (Maine's Indians) and the French in Canada."

Fort Western, the 1754 National Landmark Fort, Store, and House on the Kennebec in downtown Augusta, will reopen for the 2020 Season on Saturday, June 6, 2020.  Due to Covid-19, the days of operation have been reduced and per City of Augusta Policy, all visitors and staff will be required to practice social distancing while on the Fort Grounds, and wear face masks while in the main Fort garrison building.

New Hours are:
June: Saturdays, Sunday, and Monday, 10 am to 4 pm
July 1st through October 12th, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, 10 am to 4 pm
Last tour of the day starts at 3:30 pm.
