It was a tragic end to an incident that occurred Wednesday in Southern Maine.

According to WGME 13, the crash happened on Wednesday afternoon on Old Falls Road in Sanford, Maine. Reports indicate that around 4pm on Wednesday afternoon, a grandfather and his grandson were standing in the front yard of a home on Old Falls Road.

While they were standing there, an SUV coming down the road veered off of the roadway and into the yard, subsequently striking the pair. When emergency responders arrived on scene, the 15-year-old grandson was pronounced dead.

The grandfather, 65-year-old, Michael Gilbar of Jericho, Vermont, was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the Sanford Regional Airport to wait for a LifeFlight transpot helicopter. Sadly, the man passed away before the helicopter could reach him.

WGME reports that the driver of the SUV, who has still not been identified publicly, was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

It is still unclear what led to the double-fatal crash or if any charges will be imposed against the driver as the crash remains under investigation at this time.

This is a developing story and we will continue to keep it updated as more information becomes available to us.
