Nicole Kidman says she's had to learn how to embrace an uncertain future in the year following her highly-publicized split from Keith Urban. At first, she admits during a wide-ranging new interview with British Vogue, the prospect felt overwhelming.

"There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable," Kidman reflects, "which is exposing."

"And then at the same time [I'm] going, 'Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can go forward with an enormous amount of hope," she continues.

They were married for 19 years and share two children, 18-year-old Sunday Rose and 15-year-old Faith Margaret.

Their breakup came as a shock to fans, since Urban and Kidman had long been one of country music's most beloved couples. Over the first year since their split, rumors cropped up that both members of the ex-couple were dating other people, though most were wholly unsubstantiated.

Since their divorce, both Kidman and Urban have sent a positive message or two to each other on social media. Urban appeared to wish Kidman a happy birthday in June, and days later, she mentioned him in a Father's Day post.

In conversation with British Vogue, Kidman acknowledges that it's been a taxing year. But she also says that it brought an opportunity to radically embrace the uncertainty to what lies ahead.

"But at the same time I'm like, 'Okay, I didn't expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now,'" she recounts.

"You make all these plans and you have all these ideas of what it's all going to be like and then it's...not," Kidman continues. "You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it's completely unknown to me right now. Strange."

"It's an extraordinary purpose. Everything else is not important," she says. "These kids, now, that's what we drop everything for."

Kidman's message to her children, she tells British Vogue, is simple: "It's okay, we're here. You've got people who love you, who are going to hold your hand and get through it."
