A Brunswick man was injured in a crash on Interstate 95 in Waterville early Wednesday morning.

According to a press release from the Maine State Police, troopers responded to a two vehicle crash on I-95 northbound near mile marker 130 at approximately 5:38 a.m. on March 11.

Investigators say 41-year-old Raymond Fenderson of Brunswick was attempting to merge onto the interstate from the mile marker 130 on ramp in Waterville when his vehicle collided with another vehicle traveling northbound.

Following the collision, Fenderson’s vehicle struck the guardrail head on along the median side of the interstate. The impact left him trapped inside the vehicle.

Crews from Waterville Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and worked to free Fenderson from the wreckage. Emergency responders were able to extricate him after about 30 minutes.

Fenderson suffered serious injuries that authorities say are not considered life threatening. He was transported by Waterville Fire and Rescue to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries were reported in the crash.

State police say their preliminary investigation suggests impairment may have been a factor in the incident. The crash remains under investigation.

During the response, the passing lane of I-95 northbound was temporarily shut down while crews worked to remove the driver and clear the damaged vehicles from the roadway.

The Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by the Waterville Fire Department and Dostie’s Towing.
