Maine State Police Investigating Fatal I-95 Crash That Killed New Hampshire Man
According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety's Shannon Moss, the State Police are in the process of investigating a deadly crash that happened late Tuesday night. That crash shut down part of Interstate 95 in Newport and is still under investigation.
According to authorities, just before 11:40 p.m. on March 31, 2026, troopers began receiving multiple reports of a vehicle stopped in the northbound travel lane near mile marker 157. While they were heading to the scene, additional calls came in reporting a crash involving that same vehicle and a tractor-trailer.
Investigators say a 2013 Chevrolet Volt, driven by 33-year-old Juan Guallpa of Lempster, New Hampshire, was stopped in the travel lane when it was rear-ended by a 2021 Freightliner. The impact forced the Volt into the median. The tractor-trailer also went into the median, where it overturned onto its passenger side and came to rest blocking both southbound lanes.
Guallpa was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries and was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital for treatment.
Officials say it’s still unclear why the Chevrolet was stopped in the roadway. The crash shut down both directions of I-95 for several hours. Northbound lanes reopened around 3 a.m., while southbound traffic remains limited as crews continue cleanup efforts expected to last several more hours.
