Jackie McBurnie made her first court appearance on this morning (Jan. 7) accused of setting her apartment on fire in Lewiston. Her lawyer argued that she suffers from multiple psychological disorders.

McBurnie, 33, allegedly set a fire in the kitchen of her Bartlett Street apartment last week. About ten hours later, a second fire in the the same apartment building left a dozen people homeless. The State Fire Marshal’s Office says that fire began in McBurnie’s bedroom. She is charged with one count of arson, but Stephen McCausland, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said more charges could be forthcoming.

Prosecutors told a judge today that McBurnie admitted to the arson. Her is bail is set at $10,000. Prosecutors had asked the judge to double it to $20,000. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 30.
