Local Apple Orchards Are Saying It’s A ‘Bumper Crop’
The 'pick-your-own' apple season is in full swing and it looks like we are having a bumper crop of high quality apples to choose from.
The pick-your-own apple season has started off slow with late-summer warm weather having people focusing on the beach and BBQ's. Now with temperatures cooling into the 60's the crowds are starting to hit the local orchards.
About a million bushels of apples are grown on more than 80 farms in the state each year, according to the Maine State Pomological Society. All apple sales accounted for about $30 million in 2014. Fresh market sales accounted for nearly half of that, according to the USDA. This year, growers say, could push those numbers even higher.
