Maine Police Officer Involved in Thursday Morning Shooting

According to a press release from the Maine Department of Public Safety, a Dexter Police Department sergeant was involved in a Thursday morning shooting.

The press release explains that at about 2 AM on Thursday, Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle and Sergeant Gary Morin responded to a report of a man behaving erratically.

The man has been identified as 34-year-old Christopher Hongo.

The press release goes on to explain:

Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle and Sgt. Gary Morin responded and spoke with 34-year-old Christopher Hongo. Mr. Hongo was yelling and acting aggressively. Officers tried to take Mr. Hongo into custody and he resisted and assaulted both officers. Mr. Hongo pushed Sgt. Morin over a rock wall and then got on top of him and continued to assault him.

That's when Sergeant Morin reportedly shot at Mr. Hongo.

Mr. Hongo is currently being treated for his injuries at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Chief Wintle and Sergeant Morin were also taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries.  They have since been released.

Even though no one was killed in the incident, both will be placed on administrative leave, as is customary when an officer uses deadly force.
