Pond hockey is returning to the frozen waters of China Lake. The Maine Pond Hockey Classic (MPHC) will happen February 7th, 2014.

Pond hockey is played 4 on 4 without goalies or on ice officials, and each team is allowed to have up to 7 players on their roster.

Patrick Guerette, Tournament Director and Program Coordinator at the Waterville Alfond Youth Center says “The first running of the event was a great success for everyone involved." Players from as far as Arizona, Maryland, and Nova Scotia took part. This coming year, 250 players are expected. The tournament will feature a youth division for local players, and college division for college club teams. The MPHC is designed to be a family, youth inclusive event.

Entry fees for most divisions are $375 per team before November 16th, 2013 at which time the fee increases to $475. For the youth & college divisions the early entry fee is $250 by November 16th and increases to $325. Each team plays three pool play games for seeding followed by a single elimination tournament.

Proceeds support the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth Center. Keep up to date on the event by following their Facebook page.
