According to TheNosePrint.com's Santa Dog Index, it shows that 71 percent of U.S. dog owners will give their dog a gift this holiday season. The national average on how much dog owners will spend is $23.10.

Maine dog owners ranked 48 out of the 50 states on how much they'll be spending on their dog for Christmas. On average, Mainers will spend $11 on their dog, only Oklahoma and Kentucky came in lower on the list.

New Jersey dog owners will spend the most with an average of $30.01, New York came in next at $29.55, followed by Pennsylvania, Utah and Georgia.

Massachusetts was the highest ranking New England states at #17 and $22.91.

Here are the top five reasons that Americans give gifts to their dog:
1. To express love (72 percent)
2. Because it's fun for them (60 percent)
3. To help my dog feel included like a family member (54 percent)
4. To give my dog a moment of happiness (53 percent)
5. To feel closer and bond with my dog (43 percent)
