2020 was a rough year for most people and businesses. That includes some businesses that may not come to top of mind, such as the Maine Turnpike Auhtority.

According to a report by centralmaine.com, the Maine Turnpike suffered loses of $60 million in revenue lost due to less people traveling.

To offest the loses over the past year the Maine Turnpike Authority is proposing a rate hike of $1 beginning in November of this year. So at the York Toll Plaza, that rate increase would jump from $3 to $4 for those paying cash. There will also be addional rate increases for those who use E-ZPass also.

The Director of the Maine Turnpike Authority, Peter Mills said:

"loss of revenue during the pandemic, combined with new bonding constraints, make it infeasible to complete future capital plans without raising tolls or adjusting discounts"

The board of the Maine Turnpike felt that raises tolls is overall, a better choice than putting off needed contruction projects that are needed to maintain the Maine Turnpike.

There will be three public meetings next month so the Maine Turnpike Authority can hear public comments on the issue prior to making the changes.
