Unfortunately, it seems like we are hearing about another scam every other day.

These days, the scammers are targeting specific groups.  A few weeks ago, we heard about a series of scams that targeted people who were filing building permits with certain towns.  Earlier this week, there was a story about scammers who were targeting people who were convicted sex offenders.

Now, according to an article on the WMTW website, the Maine Bureau of Insurance is warning people about a scam that targets people who need a roof replacement.  There are fake websites popping up around the new Fortify Maine Homes roof replacement program.

Here’s the deal.

Officials say if a website is offering to check your eligibility or give you info about the program and it’s NOT on a maine.gov website, don’t trust it. Straight up. Those sites are not connected to the state or the program, even if they look convincing.

The only legit place to get information right now is the Bureau’s official site at Maine Bureau of Insurance website.

And here’s something else to keep in mind…

Applications for the Fortify Maine Homes Program aren’t even open yet.

So if a site is asking you to apply, enter personal info, or “get ahead in line,” that’s your cue to back out fast.

For now, your best move is to stick with official updates and keep checking the state’s website for when the program actually opens up.

Because in Maine, we don’t mess around when it comes to protecting our homes… or our information.
