In Maine the official state 'mammal' is (no surprise) the Moose. It was officially name so in 1979. The official state 'domestic mammal' is the Maine Coon Cat named in 1985. The United States official mammal is now the Bison.

The President just signed legislation making the American Bison the official national mammal of the United States.

The Bison is on two state flags and old nickels but isn’t recognized as a national symbol, that is expected to change since congress signed the National Bison Legacy Act. The bill would bring the Bison closer to the level of recognition and prominence of the Bald Eagle.

As a national mammal it would be on par with the national tree ‘the oak’ and the national flower ‘the rose’.
