This Sunday morning, May 22, Mars, Earth and the sun will line up perfectly in the sky. This called Mars opposition because Mars and the sun will be on opposite sides of the Earth.

This event happens once every two years and if you look to the southwest on Saturday night (May21) will you see a brighter, bigger Mars well into June.

Right now Mars is about 48 million miles from Earth but by May 30 it will be within 48.8 million miles, the closest to the Earth in 10-and-a-half years.
