Maine Man Arrested Following a 50-Mile Police Chase
If you were driving through the Waterville area on Friday afternoon and encountered traffic backups, we now know the cause.
According to a press release from the Maine Department of public safety, at about 2 PM on Friday afternoon, the Maine State Police got reports about a Toyota pickup screaming down the I-95 southbound near mile marker 190 in Orono.
Witnesses said the pickup was all over the place and going way too fast.
Troopers caught up with the truck around mile marker 182 and tried to pull it over, but the driver wasn’t having it. Instead, he kept pushing southbound, weaving between lanes and creating a serious risk for everyone else on the road.
Police rolled out spike mats to end the chase, and it finally came to a crashing stop near Exit 130 in Waterville. The truck hit the spikes, lost control, and slammed into a tree just off Main Street.
The driver, 39-year-old Nathaniel Porter of Crystal, was taken into custody and brought to a local hospital for an evaluation. He’s now facing a list of charges, including Criminal Speed, Eluding Police, OUI, and Failure to Submit to Arrest.
Main Street in Waterville was shut down for a short time while emergency crews cleared the scene and police wrapped up their investigation.
*NOTE - All suspects are considered innocent until being found guilty in a court of law
