New Hampshire & Maine Are Home to the Country’s Snowiest Counties
If you live in New England, there are a few things you can count on every year: millions of tourists visiting us each summer and winters that feature frigid temperatures & lots of snow.
Sure, there have been a few recent winters that were lacking in snow, but for the most part, Northern New England typically gets hit with several big storms.
The Snowiest Counties in the United States
Lawn Love recently ranked the snowiest counties for 2025.
The website, which is focused on lawn care, used seven different metrics to rank 258 counties across the United States. The metrics they looked at included the amount of snow a county gets during a typical winter (duh), the climate of the county, and how prepared a county is to deal with a significant snowfall.
Coos County, New Hampshire, topped the list. The northern New Hampshire county ranked 1 for snow and 11 for climate. The county had an overall rank of 74.41. Heaven for snowmobilers, Coos County typically gets about 119 inches of snow per winter.
The northern Maine county of Aroostook also made the list. At #17 it had a snowfall rank of 18 and a climate rank of 24. Much like Coos County in New Hampshire, Aroostook County has been a destination for snowmobilers for decades.
Erie County in New York and Erie County in Pennsylvania also made the list. This is largely due to the lake effect snow those counties get. Also on the list were Hill County in Montana, St. Louis County in Minnesota, and ten different boroughs in Alaska.
