How A New Hampshire Yogurt Company Is Saving Maine Dairy Farms
Organic dairy farmers in Maine were dealt a serious crippling blow earlier this year when they learned that Horizon Organic brand would not be renewing milk contracts with 89 regional family dairy farms.
With these contracts being terminated these family farms would have no way to sell their milk. That is until recent word came that New Hampshire based yogurt maker, Stonyfield Organic, which is based in Londonderry NH, would help support some of those farms by purchasing some of the milk.
According to a report by Mainebiz, this is not something new for the NH based organic yogurt producer. Stonyfield Farms co-founder Gary Hirshberg says:
“The potential loss of 89 organic family farms would be a devastating loss for our region and our environment. When we heard about the contract terminations, we knew we had to step up and help as many farms as we possibly could, beginning with our initial commitment to take a group of these farms into our program,”
According to the report Stonyfield Farms supports over 200 organic family farms, and even has an internal task force to work with government bodies and small organic dairy farmers stay in business.
