According to an article on the WGME website, Maine residents will see three new state laws take effect Wednesday that limit cooperation between state and local agencies and federal immigration authorities.

The measures, approved by lawmakers in Augusta earlier this year, are designed to prevent Immigration and Customs Enforcement from receiving assistance from a wide range of public institutions, including police departments, schools, hospitals and public housing authorities.

Supporters say the new laws are intended to improve public safety and protect the privacy of immigrants living in Maine. The legislation comes just weeks after a fatal ICE-involved shooting in Biddeford, an incident that has intensified debate over the role of federal immigration enforcement in the state.

The new laws apply to 253 school districts, 123 law enforcement agencies, 17 housing authorities, 12 state agencies and divisions, 21 public libraries, every public college and university, and Maine's two state hospitals.

Among other provisions, the laws prohibit civil immigration detention in Maine jails, restrict law enforcement from transferring detainees to ICE custody, prevent jails from sharing inmate release dates with federal immigration officials, and bar the use of ICE agents as language interpreters.

The package includes three separate measures.

"ICE Out of Policing" limits cooperation between law enforcement agencies and federal immigration officials.

"ICE Out of Schools and State Healthcare" allows public schools, state libraries and healthcare facilities to deny ICE access to private information unless agents present a judicial warrant.

"ICE Out of Our Homes" prohibits landlords from sharing sensitive tenant information with immigration authorities.

Advocacy group Maine Equal Justice said the housing measure will help prevent landlords from using a tenant's immigration status against them. The ultimate impact of the new laws will depend on how state and local agencies implement and enforce the new requirements, though immigrant rights advocates say the measures will help make Maine a safer place for all residents.
