In what quickly became a chaotic scene Monday night in Portland, News Center Maine says a large group of unruly people began shooting fireworks at Portland Police Officers.

Police were sent to investigate an unruly gathering late Monday night where an estimated 300 people had gathered outside of Anderson and Oxford streets near Kennedy Park in Portland. While attempting to disperse the crowd, officers say they became the target of the fireworks that many in the group were shooting off. A 17-year-old boy from Portland was taken into custody and charged with criminal use of explosives and disorderly conduct.

Later on just after midnight, police received word of shots fired in the same area. They were able to confirm that about 10 gunshots had been fired but were unable to locate anyone who had been shot.

After the entire ordeal was over, several Portland Police officers were checked for injury after many had reported headaches and ringing in their ears due to the sounds and proximity of the exploding fireworks.

Portland Police Chief, Frank Clark told News Center Maine,

“Such unruly and dangerous aggression and use of force against our officers and community cannot and will not be tolerated. I would urge anyone with information or video footage that could help solve this case to call or provide it to us, even anonymously, so this dangerous behavior can be quickly quelled.”

Anyone that may have more information on the events that took place on Monday night is asked to call the Portland Police Department at 207.874.8575

LOOK: Here are the 50 best beach towns in America

Every beach town has its share of pluses and minuses, which got us thinking about what makes a beach town the best one to live in. To find out, Stacker consulted data from WalletHub, released June 17, 2020, that compares U.S. beach towns. Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
